Wankers (AKA Baby Steps)

Set in “not grim up North at all” York, the series would follow the stories of four disparate characters working together in a photo manipulation shop; all with very different attitudes towards fertilisation.

This is a ‘Cold Feet’ for fertility choices in which 39-year-old Lizzy sets off on a journey of fertilisation, both aided and impeded by gay and straight friends, and colleagues. On it, she must lose her “smug-married” attitude and decide what is truly important in her pursuit of a child.

Format: 6 x 60-minute TV Episodes.

Episode 1. “Desperately Seeking Semen.”

It’s baby-making night and 37-year-old, compliant, Lizzy has got everything ready. Her husband, Simon, has been given special orders. She feels she’s had to put off having a baby until she found the right man, job, house – and even car. Who has a spare 18 years? As Simon has often said – everything has to be just perfect in their lives before they can welcome a new one into it. Well, he’s got absolutely no excuse for not going ahead now.

Lizzy comes back from a frenemy’s baby shower early with her drunken, widowed sister, Jane, only to discover that Simon has knocked up his dowdy, older secretary – Susan, and is choosing to stand by her and ‘do the right thing’.

Switching quickly from one stage of grief to another, Lizzy has to learn to stop pleasing everyone else – and go for what she truly wants, before it’s too late.
